Museum: Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum
Exhibition: Lens of Freedom. One photographer's testimony: culture as a weapon of resistance 1988-1991
The image of a crowd of many thousands, filled with the communion and mobilisation of the Revival period, striving for one goal - the restoration of Independence of Lithuania. The exhibition presents a multitude of images that seem to overwhelm the viewer, making him or her part of this crowd. The photographs from 1988-1991 capture the awakening and rising moments of the nation's path to freedom - this is only a small part of the impressive archive of photographs by the photographer Zenonas Nekrošius (b. 1957), which contains over 8 300 images. The exhibition features original silver salt prints that Zenonas made immediately after the events, developing the strips at night. Another part of the images are digital prints from scanned photographic films.
"For me, freedom is about doing what I want, going where I want, behaving how I want and expressing my opinion if I want to. When I am free from constraints and can choose for myself. Now all options are open. What more does a person need?" - Zenonas Nekrošius.
